Mazie and I had a very busy and tiring day Thursday, Sept. 10th, 2009! OK, it was more tiring for her than for me, but
two days later, I'm plenty sore from being on my knees bending over the "whelping pool". Mazie's labor was long and hard,
as she delivered her litter. Some of the biggest were breech, and they took a long time to work their way down and out. As
huge as Mazie looked, some whippet breeders (supposed friends!) were predicting up to 11 or 12 puppies. Instead of that many
normal-sized pups, she had eight whoppers!

His cheeks really aren't that wide, the skin was bunching up there. |

Another huge pup, and this one was breech - poor Mazie! |
Mazie is loving being a mama again. She was so crazy for her puppies while whelping, we couldn't take them out of the
pool when another birth was imminent. We had to leave some with her and just make sure they didn't get squished when she strained
or moved. If we took them all away, she would try to get in the basket with them, and would fret so much that her labor seemed
to shut down. It was taking long enough as it was! To give credit to her good instincts, she did get up and move
away from the puppies when another was just about to be born. Even two days later, I still have to take all of the pups
away to get her to leave the pool to go outside to do her business.

Pup 1 is a beautiful, strong girl. |
|
She was alone with mama Mazie for over 2 hours! |
Pup 2 has a break in her narrow face blaze. |
|
It's really cool - I hope she'll keep it as she grows. |
Pup 3 has very nice markings. |
|
It's interesting to me that his marked side is opposite pup 1's. |
Trying to show off his cute white chin. |
|
I love newborn whippet ears - such cute little triangles. |
Pup 5 is a gorgeous Irish-marked guy. |
|
This is going to be a stunning boy! |
Pup 6 has a very narrow blaze - I hope it stays. |
|
Love the color! |
Pup 7 looks a lot like her 1/2 sister "Meadow" |
|
from Mazie's 1st litter, born in April 2008 |
Pup 8 also has the split-face marking, |
|
this time in red brindle with more white - very flashy! |
I was home alone with Mazie when her labor started; Bill was at work. Fortunately, our youngest son, Wesley, was on his
way home from college for a visit. He had great timing, coming in just as the first puppy was about to come, so he was able
to play "gopher" and generally help out. THANK YOU, WESLEY! Thanks to Evan and Leah also, who made it over after Ev got
home from work, and were able to see #8 born and to help out with clean-up and photos. Of course, Bill also helped out after
he got home from work at around 5 p.m. Best of all - he brought pizza! You're the best, babe!
